If you’re a good driver who likes the idea of getting discounts on car insurance based on low mileage and perhaps a few measurements of your driving skills, you might want to consider usage-based insurance. Usage-based insurance (pay as you drive) refers to programs where premiums are determined by how safely, and how much, customers actually drive. Most of the programs involve a small “telematics” device that you plug into your car’s diagnostic port, which is located under the dashboard, usually on the driver’s side, or a mobile app you install on your phone.  A large number of the insurance carriers we represent now offer some sort of program rewarding safe driving. The best part? These programs may save you up to 30-40% on your auto insurance during the life of the policy. We’ve provided a short description of a few of the programs a number of our carriers offer.

Safeco Insurance RightTrack®

Once you enroll in RightTrack, you will immediately receive an initial discount on your vehicle’s premium.* Safeco Insurance® will provide you with a free, easy-to-install RightTrack device that plugs into your vehicle (no tools required). Then, all you have to do is drive as you normally would throughout the program’s 90-day review period. Once it’s over, we will determine your final RightTrack discount of up to 30 percent, and apply it to your vehicle’s premium for the life of your policy. Participation in RightTrack is voluntary.

Travelers Insurance IntelliDrive®

IntelliDrive is a 90-day program that uses a smartphone app to capture and score driving behavior of drivers covered on your policy. By enrolling you could save on your policy’s first term. At renewal, safe driving habits can lead to savings of up to 20%, while riskier driving habits may result in a higher premium. After installing IntelliDrive on your smartphone, the app will automatically detect when you get into a vehicle and start a trip. It will collect driving information for 90 days and then determine your overall star rating. Five stars is the highest, or best, score. Based on your star rating, your actual adjusted insurance rate will be reflected the first time your policy renews.

Nationwide SmartRide® Program

SmartRide, a usage-based insurance program, gives you personalized feedback to help you make even safer driving decisions. You’ll earn an instant 10% discount when you sign up. The safer you drive, the higher the discounts you could get – up to 40%.  Nationwide will send you a small device for your car within 10 days of signing up. Drive as you normally do. Then go online to track your discount and get personalized feedback about your driving trends. At the end of the program, simply send back the device and lock in your final discount. Nationwide will apply the discount at your next policy renewal.

Progressive Snapshot

Snapshot is a program that personalizes your rate based on your ACTUAL driving. It’s technically called usage-based insurance. That means you pay based on how and how much you drive instead of just traditional factors. It’s simple. Drive safe and save. Drive extra safe and save even more. There are still other pricing factors, and your rate may increase with high-risk driving. But you’re in control of what you pay for car insurance, and most drivers earn a discount. In fact, Snapshot rewards the average driver with a $130 discount. Plus, you’ll get an automatic discount just for signing up. If you don’t drive much or are a very safe and conscientious driver, you may want to consider opting into a user-based insurance program.  One of our knowledgeable team members would be more than happy to provide you with more information about one of these programs, along with other ideas about how you can maximize your auto insurance discounts.
